16 March 2011

The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, one of the world’s most prestigious international cross country rallies, and Eurosport Events announced today their partnership for the television production and broadcast of this year’s event that will take place on 1-7 April 2011.

As Official Broadcast Partner, Eurosport Events will be in charge of the TV production and will use all its expertise and editorial know-how to deliver a high standard TV product. Through the use of a wescam-equipped helicopter and land-based cameras, viewers will be able to see the story of the event in a concise and exciting way while enjoying the beauty of the country through the aerials shots.

The 2011 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge will receive regular TV coverage on Eurosport, Europe's #1 pan-European TV channel reaching over 123 million homes across 59 countries, as well as on Eurosport Asia-Pacific. Both channels will show a 12-minute daily highlights programme (repeated five times the day after) featuring the prologue as well as each of the 5 stages.

With its spectacular five-day motor sport spectacle staged across Abu Dhabi Emirate, the 2011 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge is the second round of the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup and first in FIM Cross Country Rallies World Championship. Over the year, this event has contributed to strengthening Abu Dhabi’s credentials as an attractive tourism destination. This year’s event will be based at a new and greatly enhanced bivouac, next to the magnificent five-star Qasr Al Sarab Desert resort.

While previous Desert Challenges have seen motorbike, quad-bike, four wheels and truck competitors battle cross-emirate stages, the event in recent years has gradually migrated towards a majority routing through Abu Dhabi’s majestic desert areas. During the Challenge, competitors face two days of documentation and scrutinizing before a Super Special Stage which decides the starting order. Competitors will then brave the Desert for five days. The Desert Challenge was conceived and launched by 14-time Middle East Rally Champion Mohammed Ben Sulayem

“The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge is a real test of a driver’s will to succeed. Simply finishing the entire rally is an achievement in itself, and anyone who does so deserves a lot of respect,” said Ben Sulayem, vice-president of the FIA and chairman of the events organising committee.

"We are delighted to announce this partnership with the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, a major international cross-country rallying event. We will capitalise on Eurosport Events' strong expertise gained over the last 6 years in covering rallying and cross-country to provide viewers with an exciting coverage. This event promises close competition and beautiful landscapes for all the fans“ said Géraldine Filiol, Managing Director of Eurosport Events.
